Types of output files currently available from the PIPS 3.0 model spin-up, which is in progress on the Cray T3E at the Arctic Region Supercomputer Center:

 
Monthly Average Ocean files which include:

Surface Heat Flux
Surface Freshwater Flux
Sea Surface Height (cm)
3D total velocity, u and v (cm/sec)
3D Temperature and Salinity fields (deg C and ppt)
3D Potential Vorticity
3D Potential Energy released through convection

Monthly Ocean Snapshot files, representing only the last day of that month of model integration, which include:

Sea Surface Height (cm)
X and Y components of atmosphere-ocean wind stress (cm/sec)
2D barotropic X and Y velocity components (cm/sec)
3D total velocity, u and v (cm/sec)
3D Temperature and Salinity fields (deg C and ppt)

Daily Ocean Snapshot files, which include:

Sea Surface Height (cm)
Mass transport per unit width (cm**2/sec)
Layer 1 (0-5 m) u and v velocities (cm/sec)
Layer 1 (0-5 m) Temperature and Salinity (deg C and ppt)
Layer 8 (42-53 m) Temperature and Salinity (deg C and ppt)
Layer 16 (220-270 m) Temperature and Salinity (deg C and ppt)

Monthly Average Ice files, which include:

Ice u and v velocity (m/s)
Ice thickness (m)
Ice concentration  fraction (x 100 to get %)
First level ocean temperature (C)
Ice surface temperature (K)
Heat flux from ocean to ice (W/m**2)
Sensible heat flux over open water (W/m**2)
Latent heat flux over open water (W/m**2)
Net shortwave radiation over open water (W/m**2)
Net longwave radiation over open water (W/m**2)
Ice growth rate over open water (m/s)
Sensible heat flux over ice (W/m**2)
Latent heat flux over ice (W/m**2)

  • The monthly average ocean files are ~1.0 Gb, the 30 day ocean snapshot files are ~689 Mb each, the daily ocean snapshot files are ~40 Mb each, the monthly average ice files are ~66 Mb each and the daily ice snapshot files are approximately 28 Mb each following conversion to netCDF format. 
     
  • The variables that are written to each file can be changed, within limits, so if there is a specific variable you feel it is important to have, let us know. 

 

  • Note, the model is still in the development stage and changes are being made which will affect the output.
