Olaf,
Thanks for your suggestions of possible mechanisms for the events in the
Agulhas Current movie.
Regarding your questions about the extrapolation required to produce
the movie...
The extrapolation does not invent the northward flow. There is a
current meter at 1200 m depth and 30 km offshore which exhibits
velocities fluctuating between northeastward and southwestward.
Underway ADCP data at 250 m depth supports the use of constant
extrapolation of velocities to zero at the coast. The cyclonic
(horizontal) shear is very large and constant from the core of the
current to the coast (see Webb, 1999 (or my thesis!)). Actually, the
ADCP data indicates that the velocity shear on the onshore side of the
current is even greater than the extrapolation technique produces - 1
m/s over 10 km, or 0.0001 /s.
What data have you seen to indicate that Natal Pulses are tear-drop
shaped?
Lisa.
