Basic Concepts in Physical Oceanography
Objectives:
- You will review the basic physical variables predicted by numerical ocean
circulation models. You will be able to define the variables, discuss how they
are measured, and name the units used.
- You will refamiliarize yourself with the primary physical forces, balances and processes
affecting the ocean - including tides.
- You will be able to define terms commonly used to discuss ocean circulation.
This module is divided into the following topics:
Introduction to the Primary Variables
Definitions
Tides: Concepts and Terminology
Approximations
Surface and Bottom (Benthic) Boundary Layers
