Teri, regarding your last question, there is a comparison of geostrophic shears
against Pegasus direct profiles of velocity in a
paper by Libby Johns, myself and Tom Rossby in
JGR 1989. The accuracy was good enough to detect the leading-order
departure from geostrophy due to the path curvature.
