Randy, Xiaoshu, and Tracey:

This is a very well constructed poster. I would like some
clarification regarding the form of the covariances in the
IO scheme. It is stated that it is a function of the
measurment locations and does not depend on the measurements
themselves. I assume then that ``r_0'' (equation 3 in the
appendix on the multivariate IO) is the first baroclinic
rossby radius. Did you consider using length scales from
the data? Can you please explain your choice?

A number of issues have been raised in the forum regarding
the role of topography, the locality of the array etc. It
may be that a very realistic numerical model may help to
clarify some of these issues. I am extracting a deep velocity
field and a sea surface height field from a recent 0.1-degree,
40-level POP simulation of the North Atlantic. As suggested by
Randy, I will first look to see if there is any evidence of
these abyssal eddies.

Julie
