ANALYSIS OPPORTUNITIES

Analyses of the comprehensive SANDYDUCK experiment in Duck, NC (Sep Oct 1997) is focused on cross-shore wave transformation and sediment transport on barred beaches. During this multi-institution experiment we observed:

• Cross shore wave transformation and setup / setdown.

• Detailed morphology surveys over 5cm to 2 km scales.

• Complete measurements of the velocity structure over the vertical in the surf zone and inner shelf with an instrumented sled deployed across the nearshore each day.

Thesis topics will focus on analysis of several aspects of this unique data set looking at:

• Sediment transport forced by waves and currents.

• The effects of sand ripples in wave dissipation and net sediment transport.

• Improving predictive models of cross shore wave height transformation.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Matlab and timeseries analysis will be used extensively in the thesis work. OC4211 is helpful.
