The Autonomous Ocean Flux Buoy program is being conducted to monitor and better understand the delicate balance between incoming solar radiation, sea ice, and the upper ocean that controls the thickness and extent of the Arctic Ocean ice cover. With support from the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research, a highly-specialized observation system has been developed to measure the upper-ocean/sea-ice system.
