I think - but would appreciate confirmation/denial
from Alan et al - that the "ridge" is the feature
you mention. This is consistent with the mention
of PV conservation and the position of the
Hawaiian Trough east of the Big Island. I also
can't see how much this affects the NHRC strength,
as it doesn't seem to alter the flow field at
larger scales.
