ABSTRACT
A review of the geologic effects of oceanic internal waves and tides is presented, including how internal tides might shape the seafloor on continental margins. Strong bottom flows and bed stresses associated with interactions of internal waves and topography can inhibit fine-grained sediment deposition, resuspend bottom sediment, and transport suspended particulate materials across and along shelves and slopes. These processes are not well understood, but they have major consequences for distribution and accumulations of sediments over continental margins. Examples of field studies are used to demonstrate the significance of internal waves and tides in sedimentary processes in the oceans.
