Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Material

A High Level Overview of GIS ( 1.5 Mbytes)

NPS has a set of two one hour lectures and a two hour laboratory that are used to introduce students to a GIS. The first lecture discusses GIS in general and the second focuses on ArcView as an example.

Students are generally able to do a few useful things in laboratories after listening to the lectures and performing the tutorial. These are structured laboratories that use the GIS rather than learn about GIS. The student is not an expert in ArcView with this small introduction, but can utilize some of its functions.

While it is not possible for students not in residence to perform the laboratory, the lectures are still useful. The lectures, the laboratory instruction, and a short glossary of ArcView related terms are presented here in web, PowerPoint and pdf formats.
