The float was launched in a pair with NPS#53 about 100 km offshore south of San Francisco (Figure 1). The distance between the floats was less than 3 km.

After the launch the float first moved southward, on the way made a cyclonic loop with diameter of about 20 km. On October 13, 1997 the float turned northward and on October 26, 1997 was entrained in the undercurrent (Figure 2). It was moving alongshore till December 5, 1997 when off Point Arena it moved offshore. The float made a large (about 100 km in diameter) ellipsoidal anticyclonical loop followed by a much smaller one, and then continued moving westward along a cyclonically curved arc.

The float was ballasted for 275 dbar but actually moved at 368.2 ± 6.4 dbar (Figure 3 ).
