The float was launched in a triad with NPS#25 (unsuccessful mission) and NPS#28 about 100 km southwest of San Francisco (Figure 2). The floats in the triad were launched in a nearly equilateral triangular pattern with a side of about 8 km.
The mean speed was 4.6 cm/s with most of the movement parallel to the bathymetry both in the undercurrent and reversing marginal flow (Figure 1).
On September 12, 1994 it was entrained by an anticyclonic eddy (Figure 4) with diameter of about 54 km and period of 36 days:
Number of loops 2 Diameter, km 54.1 Duration, days 71 Period, days 36 Swirl velocity, cm/s 5.5 Translation velocity, cm/s 0.6 Direction, degrees 206 Rossby number 0.02
The float was ballasted for 350 dbar and the real depth reached by the float was ~300 dbar deeper. The float sank quickly on day-293 and terminated its subsurface mission when the ambient pressure exceeded a preset allowable value (Figure 3).
