The float was launched in a pair with NPS#1 about 100 km southwest of San Francisco above the 1000-m isobath (Figure 2). The distance between the floats in the pair was about 70 km.

The float was programmed for 30-day mission with sampling rate 3 day in order to check system operation. Between August 12 and September 10, 1992 the float made a cyclonic loop with a diameter of about 20 km. The mean speed was ~2.9 cm/s (Figure 1) with most part of the trajectory parallel to the bathymetry. The float surfaced ~8 km north-northwest of the launching point.

Target depth was 350 dbar but the real level reached by the float was about 300 km deeper (between 614.5 and 659.2 dbar, Figure 3) possibly because of improper ballasting and/or leaking.
