The float was launched in a pair with NPS#2 about 100 km southwest of San Francisco above the 1000-m isobath (Figure 2). The distance between the floats in the pair was about 70 km.

The float was assembled with URI/GSO and programmed for 30-day mission with sampling rate 3 day in order to check system operation. Though the float recorded pressure and temperature during 30 days, the positions of the float are available for August 12-14 only. During this time the float traveled for about 4 km with a mean speed of ~ 2 cm/s (Figure 1). The float surfaced 97 km southeastward of the launching point.

Target depth was 350 dbar but the real level reached by the float was deeper (between 635.7 and 729.4 dbar, Figure 3) possibly because of improper ballasting and/or leaking. Between August 15 and 30 the float gradually sank till about 700 dbar with the temperature decreased about 0.5°C, and remained at depth 20 dbar for the rest of the mission.
