Tides Exercise

Objective: In this exercise, you will be obtaining predictions for tidal height, and current speed and direction for one location and time using ADCIRC, PCTides and GFMPL (height only).

Fill in the table below (you may want to print a copy and fill it in in pencil prior to submitting it online). The location to use is Korea Bay in the Yellow Sea (38o54'N, 125o02'E) for tomorrow's date at 0400 GMT. Use GFMPL, ADCIRC, and PCTides.

  1. Your Name

     GFMPLADCIRCPCTides
Height (ft) (above mean sea level)
    Current Speed (kts)
Current Direction (o) towards which current is flowing

  2. What station, or stations, did you use in GFMPL?
What are the coordinates of this station? Be sure to check whether the station(s) was offshore vs. in a river.

  3. What spatial resolution (in degrees) and how many grid points - # East-west grid points = , # North-south grid points = did you use for PCTides?

  4. On the currents picture from ADCIRC, locate the position of the station(s) you used in GFMPL. Is the difference in tidal heights between the ADCIRC station at 38o 54'N 125o02'E and that at the GFMPL station you chose consistent with the tidal heights from PCTides? Hint: Be sure heights are all given relative to the same datum. Pay attention to what time reference (GMT vs local) is used by each program.
