Abstract:
This data set shows general soil categories which are loosely based on the General Soil Map (1985) by the USDA Soil Conservation Service (now NRCS). The generalized map units are based on parent material (volcanic, limestone, alluvial, etc), landscape (uplands, bottomlands, etc.) and some soil properties (deep, shallow, etc). The generalized soil map units are derived from the detailed soil map units from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
Purpose: To provide general soil categories for general use.

The accuracy of these digital data is based upon their compilation to base maps that meet National Map Accuracy Standards at a scale of 1 inch equals 1,000 feet. The difference in positional accuracy between the soil boundaries and special soil features locations in the field and their digitized map locations is unknown. The locational accuracy of soil delineations on the ground varies with the transition between map units.

Process_Description:
Copied the detailed soil series shapefile by NRCS. Projected it toWGS_1984_UTM_Zone_55_North. Added a field called "Name" and populated field based on general soil map unit that are loosly based on the 1985 General Soil Map of Guam. The feature class was then dissolved based on the general soil map unit. Other fields were added that describe the general location, depth, and drainage of each map unit; information was taken from the Soil Survey Manuscript and reviewed by Bob Gavenda, soil scientist at NRCS. Geometry attributes were added.
