Description:

Purpose:

This data set was primarily developed for the Guam Map Book Project 2006/2007 to show all major rivers and steams on Guam.

Abstract:

This data set, which was developed in 2006, contains all the major streams and rivers of the island of Guam. The names reflect the nomenclature used by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS 7.5' Quadrangle Maps of 2000 (DGR's) as well as the 2006 QuickBird imagery by DigitalGlobe were the primary sources for this dataset. The DRG's were used to determine the general location and the name of the features while the QuickBird imagery was utilized to determine the exact location because the accuracy of the imagery is considerably higher than of a generalized 1: 24 000 DRG. In some instances where the cloud cover or the foilage was too high, the 2004 IKONOS imagery was used as a second source to pinpoint the course of the river. This data set is believed to be complete compared to the USGS 7.5' Quadrangle Maps of 2000. It contains all rivers that are in the USGS maps except one small river which could not be found on any imagery. In some cases they might deviate slightly from the USGS maps; e.g. a few streams were added when they were clearly visible in the imagery, some might be extended or even trimmed.
