Dear Randy Watts,
: Could you explain how you determined the meandering bold path curves
: and the different straight path curves on figures on the index.html
: and altimeter.html pages and respectively on the mean.html page?
The path curves on figures on the index.html and altimeter.html pages are just squematic. But that shown in the mean.html page is the mean position of the 9C isotherm at 450 m depth for the Kuroshio Extension and the mean position of the 9C at 250 m depth for the Northern Branch for the whole period, obtained from the two layer model.
: How do you interpret the SSH pictures that appear at the bottom
: of the "Interanual changes" page (Ke.html) in Qiu's poster? What
: do you look for, to discover evidence of a Northern Branch in
: those figures?
I would look for a SSH gradient associated with its transport, but since the transport of the Northern Branch is not very high, it may not be very clear (depending also of the SSH interval depicted in the figure). In Qiu’s figure, this is better recognized in the middle panel (b). In our case, we used the depth of an indicative isotherm to determine the location of the Kuroshio Extension and the Northern Branch, not directly SSH. We previously verified that the used indicative isotherm is associated with the respective front obtained by hydrographic data.
: Your suggestion is very interesting regarding interlinked
: variability between transport, latitude of the first crest, and
: longitude of the bifurcation point.
: Please comment about the relation of the Oyashio front to the
: Kuroshio and Northern Branch fronts of this poster?
We did not determine the location of the Oyashio front in this work, we did not consider it as an important factor in determining the positions of Kuroshio and Northern Branch fronts as can be the volume transport or the topography.
Thank you for your interest!
Susana.
