Joshua,
The Gulf Stream is an intensification of currents
headed poleward (northward and eastward) along the
western boundary of the Atlantic from the Florida
Straits to the Grand Banks.
There is not a sharp interface separating the Gulf
Stream from the Atlantic or from the Sargasso Sea.
I think the following references would address
your interests:
1. Section 4.3 in a textbook by
The Open University (1989) "Ocean Circulation",
Pergamon Press.
2. chapter 6 in a book titled "Eddies in Marine
Science" (ed. Allan R. Robinson, 1983, Springer Verlag).
I wrote that chapter as an overview of the Gulf
Stream and how it varies.
