Coordinates

In general coordinates are numbers that locate an object. For locations on the earth, these are commonly given as Latitude and Longitude. These can be thought of as circles on the earth or as angles from the center of the earth. This is true for a spherical earth, but is slightly modified for the true elliptical shaped earth.

Keeping the latitude constant generates a line on the earth's surface parallel to the equator. These are called Parallels. Keeping the longitude constant generates lines called Meridians. The meridians all meet at the poles. The parallels never meet.
