Azimuth and Heading

The orientation, or direction of a line is defined by the heading. This can be a symbolic name such as "north", "east", "southeast", or "southbysoutheast" etc. It can also be stated as an angle, called the azimuth or heading. (Heading is used for the direction of a ship, plane or other vehicle.) Azimuth is stated as an angle measured from north.

This angle is normally given in degrees. It has the range of 0 deg to 360 deg. Both 0 and 360 are due north. Azimuth of 5 deg is just east of north while 355 deg is just west of north.

The complication comes in "What kind of azimuth?". There are different types that basicly differ in the reference line (which north) that is used.
